Sharecare YOU (Desktop, Tablet, Mobile, VR)
2020-2022. Sharecare - UI/UX Designer, Visual Designer
Sharecare YOU is an award winning visual health suite of applications created by Sharecare Reality Lab to deliver medically accurate human anatomy, physiology, disease, and treatment in interactive 3D 360-degree simulations and environments.
Introduction
Opportunity
The project of Sharecare YOU addressed the opportunity to offer solutions to support any health education need with interactive 3D environments, videos, learning modules, and quizzes across multiple platforms: desktop, tablet, mobile, VR.
Users
Sharecare YOU was built for a myriad of users and markets:
Pharmaceutical companies to promote consumer education about conditions and treatments.
Partnerships with medical curriculums at universities to support student education and engagement.
Doctors to support patient education.
General public for anyone who would like to learn more about the anatomy of the human body.
Challenges and Constraints
The challenge of building Sharecare YOU was the extensive research needed to create medically accurate human anatomy and physiology. Furthermore, the creation of these incredibly detailed 3D environments and simulations were dependent on the team. Once an extensive library of these materials had been created, a thorough and intuitive user interface was needed to tie the experience together. With the complexity and abundance of different functionality within the Sharecare YOU Suite, there was a substantial amount of UX Architecture and planning needed to create a user-friendly experience.

The Team
The Sharecare YOU Team consisted of 3D Artists, Texture Artists, Developers, UI/UX Designers, Visual Designers, and Doctors. To support the creation of this extensive suite of applications, collaboration was a daily practice within the team to brainstorm iterative ideas, ensure the depiction of medically accurate information, and meet release deadlines.
My Role
UI/UX Designer
As the sole UI Designer and supporting UX Designer on the team, my primary responsibility was to design UI elements across desktop, tablet, and VR platforms in conjunction with building and enhancing the user experience of the products. Other responsibilities include:
Build UX architecture of application.
Solve for UX issues and improve overall performance.
Collaborate with designers and developers to maintain design and functional consistency across products.
Assist in user and software testing of internal and consumer products.
Create a redesign of the user interface and experience for a future release.
Assist in implementation of UI design within Unity.
Collaborate with doctors to ensure depiction of medically accurate functionality.
Visual Designer
With my background in illustration, concept art, and graphic design, I was the Visual Designer on the team to handle the following responsibilities:
Spearhead visual identity by creating and presenting design assets for UI/UX, consumer, and internal projects in a timely, professional manner.
Lead designer for iconography in consumer and internal projects.
Create medical concept art across VR, desktop, and mobile platforms.
Conceptualize and design medical storyboards for consumer products in healthcare and technology to help increase patient education in coordination with medical staff.
Create essential documentation to better team workflow and meet company branding standards.
Utilize Unity and After Effects to assist 3D motion graphic animations, video production, software testing, and UI/UX of internal application product.
Initial Low Fidelity Concepts
The Process
Cross-Collaborative Environment
Heavy emphasis was placed on cross-collaboration with 3D Artists, Developers, and Doctors to fully understand what materials, functionalities, and considerations the user experience would need to account for. This assisted in building out the user interface and UX architecture for the Sharecare YOU Suite. Having brainstorm sessions brought about many iterative concepts.
Research
Thorough research was conducted by the doctors on the team to fully understand the anatomy and physiology of the human body and progression/treatment of conditions. In addition to this medical information, the UI/UX Designers inventoried user feedback on pain points and gaps within the user experience of the application to enhance Sharecare YOU Suite to be more accessible and intuitive.
Solutioning
To foster a user-friendly experience, all avenues of ideas were explored to understand what would be the most ideaI user interface for the users to utilize to navigate Sharecare YOU. Due to the depth of information, materials, and functionalities Sharecare YOU provides, both low fidelity and high fidelity wireframes were explored.
Development Implementation
To support the implementation of UI/UX wireframes, potential redesigns, and enhancements within the application environment, successful design-developer handoff was important. To assist with handoff, presentation of files, assets, and documents were met with attention for delivery. Furthermore, I would support within Unity in post-production to cross-check implementation and assist with bug resolution.
